Aftermarket remote car starters…are they bad for your car?

and is there such a thing for standard vehicles? They are not bad at all. I installed one on my car. No problems at all. Look for a model with a tachometer wire. Some models only crank the engine for a given amount of time. One with a tachometer wire will also crank the engine for a given amount of time, but will disengage the starter when a given engine RPM is detected.

They make these devices for manual transmission vehicles. There are a few more very important connections to be made. There is a wire connected to the shift linkage that will only allow the unit to be activated if the transmission is in neutral. There is another wire that is connected to the parking brake that will only allow the starter to work if the parking brake is set. Make sure your parking brake works well enough to hold your car.

You will notice an increase in fuel consumption with one of these devices. This is because you are allowing your vehicle to idle in your driveway. When you are idling in your driveway, you are getting zero miles per gallon.

You need to decide if the convenience of a warm engine is worth the few extra dollars you will spend on fuel each week.
